Can Your Child Outgrow “Cross Eyes”?
“Cross eyes” is one form of a group of diseases known as Strabismus. Many parents think that a child can outgrow this condition and their eyes would align normally as they grow. Unfortunately, this is not so but there is one exception to the rule, a condition called Pseudostrabismus.
Psuedostrabismus is a condition where it seems like the eyes are misaligned but they are not. This is usually due to a flat nose bridge at birth. To distinguish pseudostrabismus from real strabismus the child should be taken to an Ophthalmologist.
CHILDREN do not outgrow Strabismus and early diagnosis and treatment is essential prevent among other things
Inability to read comfortably
Headaches
Double vision
Fatigue when reading
Unstable or "jittery" vision
Decreased 3D depth perception
If left untreated, there can be other developing symptoms which can be site threatening to the child. There are many professions that require good three dimensional vision which is not possible with severe strabismus Once this is noticed, [even if it is at birth], the child should be seen by an Ophthalmologist right away.
There are treatments available in correcting Strabismus. Many of these treatments are quite simple and may involve only correction spectacles. On the rare occasion, your child may require surgery.
